Michael A. Barto, CPA
Michael A. Barto has more than 30 years of accounting experience. He was educated in the Knoxville Public Schools and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in accounting from Southern Adventist University in 1972. Mike has served the community as a licensed CPA in the State of Tennessee and the State of Georgia. Mike has experience in all practice areas and is Managing Partner of the firm of Barto, Hoss & Company, P.C. located in Brainerd.
Mike and the Firm serve a diverse group of clients in industry, contractors, non-profits, utilities, manufacturing, retail, restaurant, and professional groups such as law firms and medical practices. Services include full client accounting, Quickbooks set-up and consulting, tax planning and compliance, financial statement audits, business valuations along with business and practice management and consulting.
We work with business start-ups and acquisitions, as well as negotiate loan agreements. We have served as accountant for the debtor in Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases, work with attorneys in dispute resolution matters in business situations and divorce litigation. We act as conservator, trustee, POA and executor in various situations. In addition to tax preparation and compliance, we also represent individuals who have significant Federal and State tax problems; i.e. compliance and/or collection.
We serve as advisors to a number of high-income individuals often providing family business office services.
Mike serves as Board Chairman of Orange Grove Center, Board Chairman of Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department as well as Chairman of the Finance Committee of his church. He is a member of the Chattanooga Rotary Club and past president of the Brainerd Kiwanis Club.
Mike and Jane, his wife of 30 years, reside in East Brainerd. They have a grown son Danny who lives in North Carolina with his wife Carrie. They also have a grown daughter, Alice, a nurse who lives in Chattanooga and her husband Rob serving in Iraq.
Doug Hawks CPA
Douglas R Hawks is a Certified Public Accountant with over 20 years of practice with the firm. He has extensive experience in the areas of individual, estate, trust, corporate, and partnership taxation as well as audit and small business accounting. He has also leaded the firm's professional compliance with the AICPA Peer Review Program.
Doug is married to Julie and they reside in East Brainerd with their two children.

Trina Hicks, CPA
Trina Hicks has more than 15 years of accounting and auditing experience. Trina received her Bachelor of Science Degree, magna cum laude, in accounting and finance from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. In 2000, she received her MBA, with highest honors, from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Trina has earned designations as a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Internal Auditor.
Trina is primarily responsible for providing audits, compilations, specialized services and technical reviews for a variety of clients. She is experienced as an auditor, in the public sector, and as an internal auditor, in the private sector. She has previously served on various non-profit committees, with the Institute of Internal Auditors and on the supervisory committee at McKee Credit Union. She is currently chairperson of the finance board at St. Stephen Catholic Church.
Trina and her husband Rick reside in East Brainerd. They have two children, Kersten and Morgan.
Henry A. Hoss, CPA
Henry A. Hoss, age 60, graduated from Columbia Military Academy in 1965 and Tennessee Technological University with a major in accounting in 1969. After graduation, he served three years in the United States Marine Corp as a Supply-Fiscal Officer, obtaining the rank of Captain. On completion of his active military service in 1973, Mr. Hoss returned to Nashville to work for the international accounting firm of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Company. While in Nashville, Mr. Hoss earned his certificate as a Certified Public Accountant.
Mr. Hoss' long-term business career serving clients as a Certified Public Accountant began in 1975 when he moved to Chattanooga to work with a local CPA firm. For several years, he served the needs of many clients in the areas of accounting, auditing, tax and general business and individual consulting. Mr. Hoss concluded that he could best serve his clients through the establishment of his own CPA firm. In 1982, Henry A. Hoss & Company, CPA's opened for business. In November 1993, his firm merged with Michael Barto & Company to form Barto, Hoss & Company, P.C. Both CPA Firms were similar in providing bookkeeping, auditing, and tax return preparation and compliance services to both individuals and businesses. The firm has thirty employees. In 2005, Mr. Hoss completed the requirements and earned a certificate as a Certified Financial Planner.
Mr. Hoss' career includes industries such as non-profits, municipalities, utilities, manufacturing, retail, fuel distributorships and professional groups such as law firms and medical groups. He has worked with business start-ups and acquisitions, as well as negotiated loan agreements. He has served as accountant for the debtor in Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases, expert witness in business valuation, consultant in dispute resolution matters and divorce litigation and appointed by the Chancery Court of Hamilton County to be conservator to individuals. In addition to tax preparation and compliance, he also represents individuals who have significant Federal and State tax problems; i.e. compliance and/or collection. He also serves as advisor to a number of high-income individuals.
Professionally, Mr. Hoss is a member of the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. As a member of the TSCPA, Mr. Hoss serves as a member and the past Chairman of the Tennessee State Tax Committee. In past years, he has served on various committees and is currently a TSCPA Board Member and Secretary. Locally, he has served as Chapter President and other officer positions, member of the Board of Directors and as a chapter representative to the State Council of the TSCPA. He currently represents his chapter on the TSCPA Nominations Committee. Mr. Hoss is also a member of the Financial Planning Council.
Civically, he is the past Chairman of the Hamilton County Water and Wastewater Treatment Authority and, as such, is interested in economic development. He has served as Treasurer of the Ronald McDonald House Charities for the past 18 years. He is a Trustee of the Tennessee Technological University Business School Foundation in Cookeville, Tennessee and member of Chattanooga's Business Alumni Committee for Tennessee Tech University, which raises funds for scholarships to area students. He also serves on the Accounting Advisory Board for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, School of Business. He is a member and Past-President of the Chattanooga Downtown Lions Club and the Brainerd Lions Club. Mr. Hoss has also been active in Republican politics, serving as treasurer for a number of candidates and as Treasurer of the Hamilton County Republican Party.
Mr. Hoss attends Rock Point Community Church. He is married to the former Patricia Campbell of Athens, Tennessee, and they have one son, Bryan, who is an Attorney. They reside in East Brainerd.
Pam Reaves, CPA
Pam is a Certified Public Accountant with over ten years of accounting, tax and auditing experience. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business and Administration with a major in accounting from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. Pam has experience in auditing A-133 and HUD for non-profits, financial statement work for construction entities and tax engagements. The last five years Pam has focused on working with small businesses assisting in providing guidance and support in bookkeeping and tax engagements. She has extensive schooling and experience in the areas of individual, trust, corporate and partnership taxation.
Professionally, Pam is a member of the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants, Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Civically, she is an active member of the Hamilton Place Rotary Club.
After 15 years in Tacoma, Washington, Pam decided to return to her southern roots and accept a position at Barto, Hoss and Company. She has resumed working on tax engagements, financial statement audits, reviews, and compilations.
Pam resides in Soddy Daisy and is a member of Central Baptist Church. She has two children and two grandchildren.
Gary Steele, CPA
Gary A. Steele is a Certified Public Accountant with over 25 years in public accounting. He has experience in individual, corporate, and partnership taxation as well as auditing and small business accounting. He has auditing experience with colleges and universities, construction, manufacturing, small investment companies, community foundations, small business, and other non-profits.
Gary resides in Soddy Daisy and is married to Lena. They have four children and seven grandchildren. He is the treasurer of Highway Bi-way Christian Crusade and a member and deacon at Mile Straight Baptist Church.
He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in accounting and business management from Tennessee Wesleyan College.
Jim Steffes, CPA
Jim Steffes is a Certified Public Accountant with over 20 years experience in the public sector. Jim's professional experience is primarily in the area of audit with a concentration in the non-profit and construction industries. He has been active on many local boards and committees including the Chattanooga Housing Authority, AAA Woman's Services, Chattanooga Track Club, Chattanooga Cross Country League, Spirit of Elijah Ministries, Association of Government Accountants and Hiawatha Estates Homeowners Association. Jim also coaches High School Cross Country and Track.
Jim graduated from California State University, Long Beach, with BS degrees in accounting and management. He and his wife, Kathi, live in Ooltewah and have five children.
